Mat Honan got hacked.

If you're like me, that sentence means nothing. But if you read the article...it all comes into a bit better focus. This reporter got hacked, his computer and phone were wiped, his accounts were destroyed, and his Twitter(and that of Gawker) were taken over by the hackers. And all the hackers had to have to get started was his name and email. They call it social engineering, but really, it's using common sense to take advantage of people's habit of tying everything together online. If you're a big user of Apple, I really suggest you read it to help prevent something similar from happening to you. As he's stated, neither Apple nor Amazon(yep, his Amazon account was hacked too) have changed their policies as of yet, so it's on the user to make sure it doesn't happen to them.

Curiosity has landed. NASA's most technologically advanced rover has just completed the seven minutes of terror and we're already seeing images of the surface. It's been a hell of a journey, but my god, it's worth it. Crying from happiness isn't a crazy reaction, is it? I mean, the entire JPL Mission Control team erupted when we got confirmation. It's surreal. This is the first Mars mission I've kept aware of since it started to gain ground, and so I feel like I've been a part of it, even if I'm just a bystander.

This is why I want to work at NASA. How could you not find this incredible?

Life is so boring. I mean, now that I have a "real" life. It's just work, eat, sleep. I doodle with icons sometimes and watch some TV, but I really need to get back into the swing of fandom, otherwise my head is gonna explode from doing too much of the same thing.

Last weekend we saw The Amazing Spiderman again. Which, yeah, it is amazing. Again. I want to make ALL the icons and real ALL the Peter/Gwen fics and also maybe all the Andrew/Emma fics. I'm convinced that while the story may not be all that spectacular(seriously, it should not take watching a movie twice + reading a dozen reviews online to figure out plot points), but the acting was so amazing that it's at the very least on par with the Rami movies. But it's been a while since I saw them, so I'll hold off on saying it's better.

This weekend we're going laptop shopping(not for me; I have mine picked out, I think), and then we're gonna go see Total Recall, which looks awesome. I've never seen the original (I know, how can I call myself a scifi fan, etc.), so I'm going in unbiased. Which apparently I do a lot? Also, I'm working my way through GOT. Still in S1, since I'm going painstakingly slow, but, eh, I'm doing it. It's okay, but I still don't see why everyone is calling it the greatest thing since LOTR. then again, having never read/seen LOTR, I can't judge

I think I have my laptop picked out. It's an HP Pavilion dv6t 7000 series, and I customized it to my liking (+ picked out a bag) for ~$800. Which is pretty good, I think. If anyone knows anything particularly about Acer Aspire V3 or this HP or just computers in general, hit me up, 'cause I'd love to pick your brain!

HEY GUYS, GUESS WHAT. CURIOSITY LANDS IN THREE DAYS. \o/
I am so ridiculously invested in this rover...if it doesn't make it, I will shed tears. Those seven minutes will truly be seven minutes of terror. I'm just hoping I can keep myself awake long enough to watch it. Who cares that there's work tomorrow...we're landing a rover on Mars!

Also, lastly, I'm trying out a new email. It might become permanent; so far I like it. I'll send out an email to my contacts if I do move over completely, but if you'd like to jump the gun email me, tis best to try afastmachine(at)outlook(dot)com.

Put your music on shuffle, post the first lines for the first ten songs, and have your flist take a stab at naming them.

1. Sunset, Broadway, are all the streets I like // Neon billboards that make me feel alive
2. Every boyfriend is the one, until otherwise proven // The good are never easy, the easy never good
3. If you're having girl problems, I feel bad for you son // I got 99 problems and a bitch ain't one (hint, it's not the original)
4. Broken bones, broken hearts, stripped down and torn apart // A little bit of rust but I'm still runnin'
5. Like ships in the night, you keep passing me by // Just wasting time trying to prove who's right Ships in the Night - Mat Kearney (guessed by hmsharmony)
6. She's got tickets to her own show, but nobody wants to go // But I'm stuck sitting in the front row, and I'm singing along like there's no tomorrow
7. A couple guys in first class on a flight from New York to Los Angeles // Kinda making small talk, killing time, flirting with the flight attendants Fly Over States - Jason Aldean (guessed by regularamanda)
8. Hydrogen in our veins, it cannot hold itself, my blood is boiling // And the pressure in our bodies that echoes up above us is exploding
9. Sweet dreams are made of this // Who am I to disagree? Sweet Dreams - Emily Browning (guessed by hmsharmony)
10. Two black Cadillacs driving in a slow parade // Headlights shining bright in the middle of the day

remember when it seemed half of LJ was just these memes solid?

Also, I want to expand my music collection/playlist; so, recs, anyone? I listen to everything and anything, pretty much, so I'll give it all a shot. :)

Day 17 - Favorite mini series
I don't really watch much of mini serieses. I've seen Alice and Crusoe(which was a cancelled and retroactively turned into a miniseries), both of which are awesome. But nothing really grabbed me the way the reboot of Battlestar Galatica did. The miniseries got me pumped and incredibly excited for the show itself. And then I watched the first few episodes and just couldn't do it. It wasn't what I wanted. I might revisit that later, but for now, the actual show just didn't work for me. But the miniseries? I am very much here for that.

Day 18 - Favorite title sequence
Hands-down. Back when Burn Notice was good, Michael's introduction, the story of a burned spy, his best friend who used to inform on him to the FBI, his trigger-happy ex-girlfriend, and sometimes family, if you're desperate, is awesome and fun and even after four years, I didn't get tired of watching and listening to it every episode.

Day 15 - Favorite female character
I'm sure nobody saw this coming. Samantha Carter has been my favorite fictional character, period, for almost as long as I've been watching Stargate. She's confident and kickass and funny and gorgeous and I just love her, okay? I can't explain it. She's a fictional character, but she's a huge inspiration/motivation. Which sounds so cheesy and silly, but it's true. She was a smart woman, independent and yet thriving in the military. Her relationships never defined her entire story, and her awesomeness is impossible to eclipse. This is the woman who blew up a sun and kicked ass and defied gender stereotypes. She helped me realize that I could have my own dream and I could achieve my goals, and for that, well, I have to love her.

Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show
Let me say, first of all, it is impossible to find pictures for this show that are not a) creepy as hell or b) photoshopped beyond all recognition. This is one of the very few that are not ridiculous. And it's still pretty iffy. Look at her hair. I just can't even. And that pretty much describes my relationship with The Vampire Diaries. It's fun and stupid and enjoyable and really my favorite thing to do is yell at the characters and make up fake conversations between Damon and Stefan, because they're so ridiculous. I think it was my first real enjoyable show after Supernatural, and so it was refreshing to have something to not take so serious and that had a good, solid plot every season(even if S3 was a bit weak). It has flaws(so, so many flaws), but I can ignore them and just enjoy it. I don't ship anyone(except maybe some mild Klaus/Caroline), and I have no strong feels about anything in particular, so I'm not super attached to anything. Which is what makes it fun.

Day 13 - Favorite childhood show
So, I didn't watch a lot of TV as a kid. There were some shows we watched religiously(Stargate, JAG), but we didn't watcha whole lot. We checked stuff out from the library, but hardly ever watched things live. That being said, the one show that sticks in my mind is The Magic School Bus. Back in the day, that was my favorite thing. I loved learning all the random stuff; some of my favorites were the outer space ones and the human body ones. I still have no idea why we were allowed to watch it, since, y'know, magic school bus.

Day 14 - Favorite male character
If you'd asked me this at any time before last year, I'd have said Jack O'Neill(apparently I have a type). But Dean Winchester has kinda taken over my heart. Note that he's not my favorite all-time character(she'll be tomorrow), but he is my favorite male character. What can I say? I've been fascinated by Dean since the first time I saw him(didn't hurt that I jumped right into his hero complex storyline in S4/5). And as he's expanded over the years, I've just gotten more and more interested in him. His personality is what's so interesting. And not in an attractive way(I mean, yeah, he's attractive too), but in a genuinely interesting way. I like to look at broken characters and try to figure out why and how they got that way. And Dean's like a character study for issues.
And also Jensen Ackles could get it. At any time, in any place.

My new mantra: All this being tired and not being able to stay up late and actually working will be worth it when you hold that check in your hand and realize that it's all yours.

I have to repeat it daily. LOL.

Day 11 - A show that disappointed you
I love Merlin. Let me get that out of the way. I've loved it since I first watched it, and I knew I would. I love all things Arthurian. I love this version, and the characters are fun, if not especially unique all the time. But, having said that, it's also hugely disappointing. They've had many, many opportunities and interesting storylines to explore, but instead they hit the magic reset button and go back to how things were. There are nuances of the relationships and stuff, but at this point, the characters seem to drag, and it's almost as though some very important events in S1/2 never even happened. And don't even get me started on how far downhill Gwen and Morgana have gone over the past two seasons. Coming off the S2 finale, the whole world was full of promise, and while the first few episodes of S3 were promising and had very cool potential, it just never regained the magic that made early Merlin fun.

Day 12 - An episode you've watched more than 5 times
I have a ton of episodes that I've watched more than 5 times; I'm a tv junkie. But I'm trying to spread the love around a bit and talk about some shows that I really don't talk about a lot. So hence Stargate Atlantis. The show that generated the pairing that got me off my butt and into the world of fanfic. And this episode, Rising, was a very good one. Yes, SGA is cheesy. And maybe Rising isn't the strongest pilot ever(being honest, it isn't. at all), but it's fun. It's easy to watch and get caught up in all over again. And the scene where the city rises will never stop being beautiful. I've always had a bit of an unhealthy love for the physical city Atlantis, and this is where it was born.

Happy Independence Day to everyone in the US! To those in Britain, happy thank-god-they're-not-ours-anymore day! And to everyone else, I hope you're enjoying your Wednesday! I added a banner to my journal; it's actually one of my favorite art pieces, titled Whaam!
There are jets. And things blowing up. And it's comic-inspired.

Day 09 - Best scene ever
I hate to say it's the best scene ever, but I'm going with this one since it's been one of my favs since I first saw it, and I have been on a bit of a Merlin nostalgia kick lately. Gwen breaks the spell that's been controlling Arthur for most of the episode, leading both of them to realize that it's twu wuv. Which, of course, leads to inevitable ~we can never be together~ drama(which I also enjoyed). Best scene of the episode, from one of the best episodes of the show. In my opinion, of course.
Remember when Merlin was feel-good?

Day 10 - A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving
A show with ghosts, demons, angels, religious issues, and a batshit crazy (incestuous!) slash fandom? Not what anyone would expect for me to like. I first got introduced to the show (because the fandom's been infamous to me since I was at Gateworld, circa 2006) via a post that catchtheskies made talking about some shows everyone should watch. I watched the trailer for S1 and thought "Well, this isn't so bad...it's a little too horror-movie for me, but, y'know, the leads are pretty hot..." and then I never really thought about it again, aside from the occasional post by someone on my flist/drama that made it into other fandoms/etc. Then, one, I was hanging out at the gym, and I decided to see what was on TNT. I was hooked as the last twenty minutes of Lucifer Rising played out on the screen. Sympathy for The Devil started up, and I had to leave, but I promised to go home and finish watching it online. And I did. And the next thing I know, I was tuning in every day when I was at the gym, and I had started watching S1, and I was looking for Sam/Ruby fic online. Next think you know, I was a huge participant at ontd_spnparty and I had fallen hard. Damn fandom.
